Of note are papers read before the Society for the Promotion of Agriculture, Arts and Manufactures by Ezra L'Hommedieu, Samuel L. Mitchill, Simeon DeWitt, Robert Livingston, and others, 1791-1804. Other predecessors of the Institute include the Society for the Promotion of Useful Arts, 1804-23; Albany Lyceum of Natural History, 1823-24; Albany Institute, 1824-99; Albany Historical and Art Society, 1886-1900; and the Albany Institute and History and Art Society, 1900-25.
